Mary walked into the restaurant with a flourish. Her scarf got caught in the door hinge and pulled tight as she stepped down causing her to choke and trip down the stairs.
Maxwell was waiting at the bar. "Christ you're late," he said. "It's boiling in here."
"Take your hat off," she replied.
Max signalled the waiter and paid his tab. "You want cozy or action?" He asked, indicating a booth in back, then a circular table in the center of the restaurant.
Mary shrugged. "It doesn't matter."
"No, no, no. I'm not falling for that one," said Max.
"I don't have a preference," Mary insisted.
Maxwell's throat swelled. He pressed his hand onto the table, working his thumb against the wood grain. The rough texture gave him comfort. He swallowed, taking in air.
"Here's a table's in the middle of the room," he said. "Waiter comes by, he bumps the chair, you spill yer wine." Max sat down at that point for emphasis. "Do you see?" he implored, gesturing to the inadequate space between the back of his chair and the chair behind. "Do you see how this could not possibly work out?"
"I don't drink wine," Mary replied.

01/10/2005TheBuyer (5): I read this the first time as if the guy was waiting for Christ, confused the hell out of me. I like this a whole shitload. Yup.

01/10/2005Mr. Pony: I love the way this is told, but I don't yet know what it's telling me!
01/10/2005Jon Matza: I interpret this as being written almost exclusively to outrage (or at least get a reaction out of) Slocum.

01/11/2005John Slocum (3): Matza, you're wrong. The character, Mary, who doesn't 'drink wine' choked herself and fell down the stairs. She's not a very serious or physically coordinated person and therefore does not pose a threat to Sloc.
01/11/2005Litcube: I interpreted this as: WWWHAAT!?
01/11/2005The Rid (3): Some people at my office told me they'd four this, so I told 'em to sign up. They didn't.
01/11/2005TheBuyer: I can't put my finger on it, but something about this woman falling spectacularly on her ass and no one seems to notice, or that she doesn't seem to care really worked for me. Also, all of the damage she has no doubt caused in the past made it good and subtle. My five was based on what isn't in the short , if that makes sense.
01/11/2005The Rid: Makes sense, Buyer.
01/11/2005cuntry: Buyer, i am the mistress of subtlety.
