08/24/2004Mr. Pony: Summer: Here is a new thing for you to play with: "Negative Space". Author, good use of backgrounds to convey the mood in a subtle way. That and the use of framing and the angular distribution of Negative Space contribute almost as much as the figures to the overall effect. Here's the thing, and somebody stop me if I'm wrong. What I'm seeing here is a story told with truly outlandish and disturbing imagery, and then capped off with a slightly less disturbing (almost "mainstream disturbing") joke. The effect is sort of jarring--And I think I've seen the author do this before, sometimes it's frightening, and sometimes it flattens out the piece. Please, what does everyone else think about this issue? Discuss, then take some time to poke the robot in the next room.
08/24/2004TheBuyer: Mr. Pony: In this case the background combined with the smirk on that asshole cat is what took this up a notch to a five from a four for me. The joke leans to the middle but the tone and look of this short rescues it.
